Where to go with a group of food loving girlfriends, one of whom has just popped over from Melbourne, for a long awaited and leisurely night of gossip, laughs, eating and drinking? That would be St Michael 6003.

Those having dinner at St Michael 6003 have two options – a choice of 3 plates, with each person being able to select their own 3 plates, for $49 plus $12 for each extra plate or the Degustation menu with the Chef’s choices for $89. We went the latter with the wait staff happy to note special dietary requirements (that would be me needing gluten free).

Let me just say that the service at St Michael’s is terrific. Attentive without being in your face. Professional but still friendly. Accommodating but no attitude. Gotta like that.

And overall the food was fantastic. Some dishes were a bigger hit with some of us more than others, but none of us were unanimous on what we liked most or least, despite all 5 of us eating the same (well, almost the same) thing. We all agreed it was all good, with preferences coming down to personal tastes rather than any particular dish being a miss.

The girls got bread to start, I got these. What’s not to love about still popping, salty pork crackers? Winner, hands down.

This was one of my favourites. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the combination of tomato, corn and jalapeno a winner.

This was the gluten free version – the girls plates also had orecchiette.  I prefer my pumpkin a tad more cooked, but for one it was their favourite dish of the night.

Well, mine was potato. The quail was superb.

For mains we got to choose between lamb shoulder, which had been cooked, shredded and re-formed and finished for service (above) or trout (below). I didn’t have the trout and for the life of me can’t remember what it came with but it certainly looked good.

Next up was a cheese course…

The girls also got a lovely sliver of carrot cake on theirs.

And then we had a bonus course, a surprise palate cleanser from the Chef.

I can’t remember what the girls got but mine was this amazing bowl of yoghurt and balls of fresh and frozen bits, including strawberries, raspberries and fresh herbs. Everyone looked at it enviously, as well they should of, because it was really, really fresh, tangy and yummy. I didn’t share.

And we finished with a silky parsnip icecream sitting on a bed of crunchy cornflakes. Very retro. Very moreish. Stuffed.
