My bad. Despite being one of my favourite local cafe’s I realised last week that I’d yet to do a review of Mrs. S on the corner of Eighth Ave and Whatley Cres in Maylands. Yes, I’ve popped the odd photo or three onto Facebook over the last few years, but a proper blog post? Time to remedy the oversight.
Mrs. S is deservedly popular. It’s pretty much busy all day every day (except Monday, when it’s closed) for breakfast, lunch and morning and afternoon tea/coffee. One glance at the pic above should tell you why. Whilst the display and selection of cakes and treats is extensive and superb (owner Sarah is a keen baker), there’s also a well considered breakfast and lunch menu that always delivers on the taste, value and presentation fronts – just check out my breakfast of cardamon rice pudding with caramelised banana, dates and nuts ($16.50) below:
There are good vegetarian and gluten free options available and more substantial snacks such as The Manwich with pulled pork ($16.00) or Open Steak Sandwich with sweet potato crisps ($24.50) to satisfy the carnivores or those that are extra hungry. Breakfast lovers will be pleased to know that it’s served until 3:00pm and I can highly recommend the herby mushrooms and free-range chicken chipolatas ($5 and $4 respectively) as sides to poached, scrambled or fried eggs on toast ($13.00, gluten free bread add $1.50).
So if it’s been a while since you’ve visited Mrs. S, rest assured it’s as good as ever. If you’ve yet to visit, trust that your effort to go will be rewarded and if you’re a regular, you’ll be going ‘Duh!” and wondering why it took so long for me to write this. Congrats and thanks to Sarah and her team for keeping up the standards at their wonderful cafe.
