If you still haven’t bought the father figure in your life something for Father’s Day, here are 5 ideas for gifts that will go down much better than socks & jocks and support local small business owners at the same time. Winner!

1. Clothing & gifts

Check out General & Aesthetic. at shop 769 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley. They stock lots of WA brands, makers and producers and have a great range of skincare, gifts, local band merch and records, yummy goodies, camping gear, men’s accessories and grooming items (I was going to say men’s bits, but that looked all wrong…). You’ve also got Providence Clothing Co on Angove Street in North Perth, and long-time Mount Lawley local Elroy Clothing.   They trade from their warehouse off Wenberi Lane (near the rear of Second Ave IGA). You can scope out their stock online also.

2. Food

For the foodie, Tom’s Providore has a plethora of treats (and wine) to buy. Also, try Smoult’s in Maylands or Pimlott & Strand in Dianella. And if he’s a keen cook (or fancies himself as one) why not send him to Perth BBQ School in Maylands? They offer a heap of very popular workshops to choose from including Charcoal Barbecue Fundamentals and a Seafood Barbecue Masterclass – yum!

3. Booze

There are SO many great independent alternatives to Dan Murphy’s to support. There’s DeVine Cellars in Inglewood & Noranda, Commune Wine Store in Maylands, La Vigna in Menora, or Grand Cru Wineshop and Cellar in Mount Lawley. And if he’s cut back on alcohol, they’ve all got alternate low or no alcohol options too.

4. Wellness

Why not give a stressed-out Dad (!) who could do with a break a float tank, massage, or infrared sauna session (and get one for yourself whilst you’re at it!) from Clear Mind Studio. Then, of course, there’s also the very popular Fieldwork Health in Inglewood, Physical Focus, based at Terry Tyzack or Wellness on Beaufort in Mount Lawley. Or, you could shout him to a membership at a local gym or some PT sessions – there are literally oodles of those.

5. Books, games & collectibles

If he’s into gaming, check out Retro Collect in the Astor Arcade in Mount Lawley. This quirky, tucked-away store is a treasure trove of retro gaming-related stuff. They do vouchers too. For books, games, and comics or graphic novels try Rabble Books and Games in Maylands or the always reliable Beaufort Street Books and Planet Books, both in Mount Lawley. The latter has a great range of gifts too. Toilet basketball?

Still struggling for ideas? There are heaps of funky independent barbershops around where you can treat Dad to a decent haircut and shave. Or, how about a voucher for one of his favourite cafes, small bars, or restaurants?

So instead of grabbing that last-minute voucher from Bunnings or BCF, have a quick think before you drive and try and support local this weekend – a small business owner and their family will be grateful that you did!
