I’m one of those people who still enjoys reading and dragging around physical books rather than an e-reader and bookshops have been a haven for me since I was a child. Here’s 5 to try ranging from local institutions to a couple of relative newcomers. Enjoy.

Mainly Books Secondhand Bookshop

209A Bulwer Street, Perth
Open 10:00am to 5:00pm daily

Mainly Books has been around since 1988 having closed briefly in 2007 when the building it was in was re-developed to re-open where it is now in 2009.  As well as a wide range of hardback and paperback fiction and crime, it carries philosophy, poetry, plays, jazz, film, travel, Australiana, Western Australiana, literature, the classics, art and science fiction. Well loved by its patrons.

Rabble Books & Games

2/46 Eighth Avenue, Maylands
Open 10:00am to 6:00pm Monday to Sat and 10:00am to 3:00pm on Sundays.

Rabble Books & Games opened its doors only a few months back and has already become a popular stop on eclectic Eighth Ave. Run by couple Sam & Nat they post pics of their selections regularly on Facebook and Instagram and as part of their wide range have a good children’s section as well as Graphic Novels (which is one of the few things I can still get my older boys to read). A great local go to for presents

Beaufort Street Books

567 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley
Open 10:00am to 6:0pm everyday with the exception of Thursday and Friday when it’s open to 9:00pm.

Because no local book shop list is complete without this gem. Jane and her passionate team live and breathe books and its my usual go to. Follow them on Facebook to keep up to date with their regular Author events (the very modest ticket price include nibbles and wine!) and they host both children’s and adult bookclubs. Check out their website for all the details.

Planet Books

638 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley
Open from 10:00am daily until 9:00pm Sun to Tues, 10:00pm Weds to Thurs and 11:00pm Fri & Sat.

Perhaps its the late opening hours, or the fact that it’s been on the strip for more than 25 years, but Planet Books has a diverse range of loyal followers that reflects the eclectic range of books that they stock. And it’s a great place for finding cheeky greeting cards. An institution.
479 Beaufort Street, Highgate
Open 12:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday to Friday and 10:30am to 5:00pm Sat & Sun. Closed Mondays.
Not strictly a book store as much as a vinyl record store that also stocks specialist books, recent addition to Beaufort Street Highgate Continental, in their own words, offers “A curated selection of imported small-goods for the true connoisseur”, with a range of esoteric genres you’re unlikely to find elsewhere alongside books on contemporary art, photography, design, cultural theory, and architecture. If you’re curious as to what they stock check out their website and follow them on Instagram for their gorgeous album cover posts.
